A tap on the bum and an hour of tickling

Tonight was a fun experience. MacKenzie and Bailey had earned some movie time so they were upstairs watching. Thankfully Brendon is at an age that when I get desperate he can be distracted with a movie so he was up with the girls happily watching along. Lexi was downstairs with me. She was sitting at the counter trying hard to get all of her homework done. I was making my "fall back on when I have started nothing else and it is 4:30" dinner - pancakes. After getting the pancakes onto the griddle I turned to see Lexi dancing around while studying a problem. I came up behind her and tapped her on the bum with my spatula. She turned in surprise and tried to get me back.

That quick decision turned into a tickling fest that lasted an hour. I would wrestle with her on the ground and tickle. Her defense was to take off her smelly socks and try to get them in my face. We laughed so hard. We chased each other around the downstairs tickling and playing with the smelly socks.

Occasionally I had to go back and flip the pancakes and start more. While I would be there she would try to sneak up on me to tickle, tap or get me with the socks. It always ended with a wrestle, tickling and hysterical laughing.

When I finally had to stop our fun so we could gather for dinner she looked at me and said, "Mom, that was soooooo fun. Can we please play that game again?" It was a memory that I will cherish and duplicate again in the future - a time when just Mommy and Lexi could play and laugh.

In the book that I am currently reading, "Life's Greatest Lessons: 20 Things that Matter" by Hal Urban, it says, "Human beings need to have fun. We need to play, and most importantly, we need to laugh. Life may be hard and at times unfair, but that doesn't mean it has to be intolerable. And it certainly doesn't mean that we can't enjoy it. Humor is what helps." I can attest that this statement is true. Humor and laughter turned an otherwise uneventful time into one that both she and I will remember for a while. It will be a catalyst for more fun and enjoyable experiences in the future. And it all started with a small tap on the bum....

You guys are such a cute family! We really look up to you guys! Thanks for being such a wonderful example to us!
(And thank you for offering to help with Abby. We'll give you a call if we need anything. Maybe Abby could come play for a morning after the baby is here. I hope this boy comes soon!)

I love moments like that. Just giving them individual attention makes their day! Its hard to do sometimes but so important.

sounds like you both enjoyed it! And if you need some more quick meal ideas, I have a repetoire of 30 minute meals (because let's face it, when you have four kids, sometimes that is all the time you have!).
