A call for help!!! Ideas? Suggestions? Thoughts?

I am single-handedly doing the Spell-A-Thon fundraiser for our school. I am not too happy that the responsibility dropped into my lap, but I am trying to rock it out of this world! So far it has come together beautifully! I know that a lot of thoughts and ideas came as inspiration as I brainstormed and prayed over what to do.

Part of this event is a kick off assembly on Monday! I still have NO IDEA what I am going to do or say. Ok, of course I have to explain it to the entire school, but HOW?!?! (And why I am nervous to do something in front of elementary age students???)

I need a FUN and CREATIVE way to get their attention and make it memorable. I have been on such overload getting all of the documents, forms, prizes and everything else ready that I haven't even had time to think about this aspect of it. I asked everyone last night at our PTA Baord meeting and basically got a "have fun with that" kind of response. UGH! No help from them.

So - I am turning to my blogging friends for suggestions. You are all VERY creative in the things that you do. You will have suggestions, right?

The only two somewhat possibilities that I can think of is doing some kind of big Audrey Hepburn kind of hat with big sunglasses and a boa and doing something off of that, but what? And would 4th and 5th graders think that is cheesy or cool? Or, I remember a catchy little song from girls camp about 20 years ago. I could change the words and sing them a song. And/or even teach it to them Would that be scary?

Come on creative juices - flow!! flow!!! flow!!!!!

So - I will be EAGERLY waiting for all of your lovely comments to see what you suggest!!!!!!! Help a sister out, won't you?!?!?!

OK I was braining storming about this with a brilliant person and we came up make it a game show like Jeopardy or Who wants to be a Millionaire. That's a start.

you might do something that involves some of the teachers like a mock spelling be

We did this when I taught school many times. I say you must get inside the brain of the kids that are the audience. What is in their "culture"? I would involve the kids/teachers because that is exciting for the kids. (We never enjoyed a parent standing up there too much because we did not know them-but the teachers- the kids thought that was great). I would use music in some way for sure. One of the funnest events I did when I taught 6th grade was a version of the Napoleon Dynamite dance for the dance festival-I taught them it and they did the dance-and - the 6th graders thought it was awesome because it was so popular back then. :)
I would do something like "So you Think you can Spell" or "American Speller" or something like that involving the kids and teachers as much as possible. But Don't put them on the spot- this would take some planning and asking in advance :) good luck! (I don't miss those days- more than 10 years of stuff like that...happy to be on a break from it for now :))

I wish I had some good ideas for you, but I am pretty bad when it comes to this kind of stuff. I am sure, though, you will find something great and the kids will respond to it. Way to go you for getting involved and being willing to help. These are the important things the kids will remember their mom did for them. It's so important to be involved and there with school, ect. How are you feeling?
